How To Volunteer

It takes a community to support our Lemons of Love mission. Each year, we welcome individuals and groups to volunteer with us in a variety of ways. This includes hosting fundraisers, volunteering at our events and utilizing individual talents to support those impacted by cancer. To learn more, email lemonsoflove14@gmail.com.

Volunteer Stories

Jamie Sturgulewski

I love volunteering to drop off care packages whenever I can because a Lemons of Love care package was the first thing I received at the hospital. I never expected anything like that. I could not believe there was a group or people that literally volunteered their time to make these support services available to me and all cancer survivors/patients and thrivers.

The fifth graders at Fairview and Lions Park schools in Mt. Prospect volunteered for Lemons of Love. We chose Lemons of Love for many reasons. It is a local charity with a cute little building in the heart of our town. We wanted to show these kids that they can help people and also have fun doing it. Simple things can bring such joy to other people, especially to cancer patients who are going through a difficult time.

Volunteer Opportunities

For Kids

Help Lemons of Love by hosting a lemonade stand of your own. It’s a fun, easy way to STAND up to cancer in your front yard, at the park or at your school. Mix your best batch of lemonade and start raising money today! After you donate your earnings to Lemons of Love, we will send you a certificate for your contributions.

We are always in need of Happy Pictures! We put a Happy Picture in every Lemons of Love care package we share. We welcome kids of all ages to draw colorful pictures with happy, upbeat images. Please do not include any words, just happy drawings. Children are encouraged to sign the back of their picture with their first name and age. These pictures are meant to be physical pictures that we can place in our care packages. Please make these pictures AT LEAST 8.5″x 5.5″ in size, but can be a full sheet of paper.

Please mail completed pictures to the Lemons of Love Resource Center at 406 Central Road, Mt. Prospect, IL 60056. For printable instructions and drop-off locations, click here.

We do not offer service hours for happy pictures.

Tweens and teens can help us create encouraging cards and pictures for our care packages. These cards feature a lighthearted pun like “Ewe Can Do It!” or “You’re Turtle-y Awesome” and have a simple picture to go with it. For details and drop-off locations, click here.

We do not offer service hours for Punny Pictures.

Individuals who knit or sew can contribute special items for our care packages. Port pillows are small pillows that attach to a car seat belt to protect chemo ports. For a pattern, click here. We also put handmade knit hats in our care packages. Please use soft yarn and avoid bulky seams. For drop off details, contact julie@lemonsoflove.org.

During November and December, we partner with PetSmart to share care packages with hospitalized children and their siblings in hospitals during the holidays. This program is our most significant volunteer effort each year. People can donate items or sign up to fill bags and deliver them to hospital personnel. Past volunteers include individuals, service organizations, Scouts, extended families and individuals needing service hours.
